COVID-19: Why America Never Should Have Been Shutdown!

The information and statistics below on the five global pandemics were taken from articles written by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

1918 Pandemic (H1N1 virus)

1918 Pandemic

The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Although there is not universal consensus regarding where the virus originated, it spread worldwide during 1918-1919.

In the United States, it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918. It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States.

With no vaccine to protect against influenza infection and no antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections that can be associated with influenza infections, control efforts worldwide were limited to non-pharmaceutical interventions such as isolation, quarantine, good personal hygiene, use of disinfectants, and limitations of public gatherings. Another important non-pharmaceutical intervention was getting as much fresh air and sunshine (Vitamin D) as possible.

The worst pandemic to date and, to our knowledge, global economies did not come to a screeching halt! (my insert)

1957-1958 Pandemic (H2N2 virus)

In February 1957, a new influenza A (H2N2) virus emerged in East Asia, triggering a pandemic (“Asian Flu”). It was first reported in Singapore in February 1957, Hong Kong in April 1957, and in coastal cities in the United States in summer 1957. The estimated number of deaths was 1.1 million worldwide and 116,000 in the United States.

1968 Pandemic (H3N2 virus)

The 1968 pandemic (H3N2 virus) was first noted in the United States in September 1968. The estimated number of deaths was 1 million worldwide and about 100,000 in the United States. The H3N2 virus continues to circulate worldwide as a seasonal influenza A virus. Seasonal H3N2 viruses, which are associated with severe illness in older people, undergo regular antigenic drift.

2009 H1N1 Pandemic (H1N1pdm09 virus): A New Flu Virus Emerges

The H1N1pdm09 virus was very different from H1N1 viruses that were circulating at the time of the pandemic. Few young people had any existing immunity (as detected by antibody response) to the H1N1pdm09 virus, but nearly one-third of people over 60 years old had antibodies against this virus, likely from exposure to an older H1N1 virus earlier in their lives. Since the H1N1pdm09 virus was very different from circulating H1N1 viruses, vaccination with seasonal flu vaccines offered little cross-protection against H1N1pdm09 virus infection.

While an H1N1pdm09 vaccine was produced, it was not available in large quantities until late November, after the peak of illness during the second wave had come and gone in the United States.

From April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010, CDC estimated there were 60.8 million cases, 274,304 hospitalizations, and 12,469 deaths in the United States due to the H1N1pdm09 virus. Additionally, CDC estimated that 151,700 – 575,400 people worldwide died from H1N1pdm09 virus infection during the first year the virus circulated.

Since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, the H1N1pdm09 flu virus has circulated seasonally in the U.S. causing significant illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths.

2019 Pandemic (SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19): A New Flu Virus Emerges, Again!

COVID-19 is caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.

As of today, May 24, 2020, there have been 5,406,537 cases of COVID-19 and 345,036 deaths worldwide. In the United States there have been 1,643,098 cases of COVID-19 and 97,711 deaths.

However, according to Dr. Fauci and Dr. Brix, a very liberal approach to tracking the number of deaths is being taken. In other words, if a person is diagnosed with COVID-19 but actually dies of something unrelated to the virus, say a heart attack or stroke, they still code it as a COVID-19 death.

With that one fact in mind, some experts say the actual number of COVID-19 deaths are at least 25% less than the reported number. That means there may be somewhere in the neighborhood of approximately 73,000 deaths or less , instead of 97,711 deaths to date in the U.S.A.

And, for some reason this time, global economies have come to a screeching halt! WHY?

COVID-19: Facts vs. Fiction

Now let’s take a look at some very interesting factual statistics we don’t hear much about from the mainstream media:

COVID-19 Compared to Other Illnesses

Global Deaths 2020 (2)

Maybe, just maybe, world governments are allocating way too many costly and precious resources in the wrong areas! And, instead of all the fear mongering and negative news coming from the mainstream media, just once it would be nice to hear some positive news like the statistics below:

COVID19 Survival Rates

There’s no question we all should be taking the coronavirus very seriously and following all the non-pharmaceutical interventions we are being asked to abide by. However, to think we should have to shut down global economies, schools and universities, houses of worship, and mandate people stay locked up in their homes until some government official decides to give us permission to go out is proving to be a real mistake and more of a power grab by certain public officials!

Too many folks are operating out of a spirit of fear which is causing a lot of foolish and totally unnecessary decisions to be made so that no one else will die from COVID-19. However, I think we all can agree that death is inevitable whether it’s from the coronavirus or not.

And, depending on your worldview, it’s no wonder why some will do anything to try and live as long as they possibly can while others know whose hands their lives are in and are at peace with the day they take their final breath, no matter how and when it comes.

You see, if you don’t believe in a Sovereign God who has numbered our days on this earth, then you will do anything and everything you can to stay alive. Even if it means giving up your freedom to those who are promising you safety and healthy living.

However, those who believe in God’s Providential Hand on the entire universe know that He has already numbered the days each of us will spend on earth. And, whether it’s dying at the hands of the coronavirus or taking our last breath while resting comfortably in a recliner, there is absolutely nothing we can do to thwart or circumvent that final outcome.

“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.” (Psalm 139:16) “A person’s days are determined; You have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.” (Job 14:5)

The Bottom Line: Use wisdom and common sense, and trust God for the final outcome.

To God be the glory!
